On this Day – Saturday 3rd November 1962

George Kirby scored his first hat trick for the club in a 6-0 win at home to Middlesbrough. His treble came in a blistering four-minute spell between 49 and 53 minutes. Kirby had been bought from Plymouth two months earlier to replace the ageing Derek Reeves who was sold to Bournemouth for half that amount following this match. George O’Brien got two and Terry Paine the other.
