Saints equalled their best ever start to a season and climbed to forth in the premiership table as they won 3-1 at Spurs. Their third consecutive win made it six games ubeaten and saw the side rise to their highest ever position under the tenure of Gordon Strachan who joked: “I’m going to go home, i’ll get a Coca-Cola and a packet of crisps and I will be quite happy just staring at the league table on teletext for about three hours”. It was an electrifiying display from Saints who tore Spurs to shreads with two goals from James Beattie and one goal from Kevin Phillips to the delight of the travelling fans who glorified in the humiliation for former manager Glenn Hoddle who was sacked shortly afterwards.
